The City of Santa Cruz invites qualified individuals to apply for the position of Assistant Engineer I/II in the Water and Public Works Departments. Reporting to an Associate or Senior Engineer, the Assistant Engineer I/II is a junior level position that provides technical assistance for a variety of capital improvement projects and ongoing operations. Typical duties may include: technical calculations, memorandums and report writing; design and preparation of plans, specifications, and bid documents; data collection and management; geographic information system (GIS) and AutoCAD support; and construction field support and inspections. The two open positions in the Public Work Department Engineering Division are in the areas of General Engineering and Wastewater/StormWater/Refuse sections. Santa Cruz is full service city and this is an opportunity to be fully immersed in the design, inspection, permitting and funding of transportation, infrastructure and facility projects. We work collaboratively and in a team environment to complete projects that serve our community and the environment. The Water Department's mission is to provide safe, clean and reliable drinking water to the City's 90,000+ customers it serves. It is seeking a motivated professional with experience in drinking water treatment and distribution. The ideal candidate will demonstrate proficiency in project planning and management; oral and written communication skills; siting of project facilities; reviewing environmental documents and technical reports; engineering analyses of new and existing projects (e.g. tanks, water mains, pump stations, treatment facilities, etc.); and have a broad understanding of water regulations, treatment processes, hydraulics and water quality.
