Supporting the businesses intended for the planned specialty products division of the intended merger between Dow and DuPont, the Emerging Innovation team drives growth and value creation by developing transformational business opportunities throughout the company. We work hand-in-hand with the businesses to (1) identify emerging innovation opportunities, (2) rapidly reduce critical uncertainties, (3) develop and incubate the most promising projects. We help build, sustain, and realize a strong innovation portfolio. Emerging Innovation is seeking a market focused Emerging Innovation Design Manager to be a constant source of creative, market-back, and strategically relevant opportunity concepts to feed the company’s transformational opportunities pipeline. The Emerging Innovation Design Manager will be the embodiment of proprietary market insights and unmet customer needs, and will be adept at translating these into compelling opportunities.
The Emerging Innovation Design Manager is primarily responsible for identifying and shaping domains that Emerging Innovation will explore. The position will dive into these domains to develop early stage opportunity concepts based on current and future customer value drivers and needs.
In addition to creating new opportunity concepts for the front-end of the innovation funnel, the Emerging Innovation Design Manager will lead scouting activities and build an expanding network of external value chain and ecosystem contacts as resource for customer understanding, market insights, and open innovation.
To fulfill these responsibilities, the Emerging Innovation Design Manager will be expected to:
•Develop an understanding of future trends, emerging areas of interest for the company, and the Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Environmental and Legal (PESTEL) factors that will influence identification and adoption of novel offerings.
•Engage with leaders across the company responsible for innovation, growth, and strategy to develop and maintain perspective informing identification and shaping of domains based on strategic fit.
•Collaborate with the Technical Emerging Innovation Design Manager to shape and develop the domains of interest for further evaluation and exploration.
•Network with the community of external adopters, value-chain players, and end-users to develop insights on needs and segmentation derived from direct engagement, interviewing, and ethnography.
•Engage with external resources in academia, 3rd party providers of market/consumer research, and consultants as required to develop market insights.
•Use creative imagination to design novel and transformational opportunity concepts supported by market needs and/or future trends, and aligned with the company’s strategy.
•Champion domains and opportunities by communicating a compelling vision and engaging stakeholders to gain support for progressive stages of exploration and pursuit.
•Identify and reduce opportunity uncertainty – both commercial and technical – to maximize the likelihood of success (or terminate as appropriate).
•Lead innovation projects and diverse project teams to accomplish objectives.
Key measures of success for the Emerging Innovation Design Manager include the quality and quantity of domains and opportunities entering the innovation pipeline and degree of effectiveness in building a community of value-chain players and adopters that can be leveraged for insights.
•10 years in customer facing positions including business development and/or marketing
•5 years in people leadership roles (line management and/or formal project/program leadership)
•Broad familiarity and aptitude in nutrition and health, industrial biosciences, and advanced materials industry verticals.
•Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in a science or engineering field (preferred).
•Ability to travel up to 25%.

The candidate for Emerging Innovation Design Manager must be curious and empathetic, able to use creativity and imagination to translate insights and needs into opportunities, understand technologies at the effects and source-of-advantage level, and have strong business acumen. The Emerging Innovation Design Manager must also be well versed in strategic marketing, opportunity analysis, primary and secondary research methods, ideation techniques, and design thinking approaches. The candidate must be a consummate networker, effective storyteller, and able to operate across strategic, tactical, and detail levels. They must be comfortable under conditions of high uncertainty, synthesize and act on complex and ambiguous information, and lead by influence effectively across all hierarchical levels and organizational boundaries.
